Clay Aiken, Raleigh, North Carolina, March 12, 2010 - oh my, what a night.  I'm going to come clean right off the bat and let everyone know that I am NOT good at recapping.  I get so caught up in what is on that stage that I cannot process little tidbits, so this recap will not be song by song, except maybe a few, but more my general feelings and impressions.

The pre concert excitement was palpable - sitting in an auditorium with hundreds of my closest friends waiting for the man who brought us all together to hit that stage.  It had been WAY too long.  Sitting in the 2nd row, the best seat I have EVER had for any concert I have attended, I almost couldn't sit still.

First off, I must give a shout out to whoever it was who did the lighting and the set design for this taping.  It was magnificent, pure genius.  It set an amazing ambiance that complimented, but never overshadowed, the amazing talent on that stage.  I have been to hundreds of concerts, from symphonies to Metallica, but I have to say that I have never seen a show where every last detail was so well thought out and planned - from the chandeliers to the pretty little lights that looked like a star filled sky.

Mack the Knife.  It has been described so many times - Clay's back to the audience in silhouette - perfection.  When he turned around, started to sing, and the lights flooded the stage, the audience, hell, it felt like the entire auditorium (and maybe half of downtown Raleigh), the impact was absolutely mind boggling.  Although we later learned that maybe the song wasn't perfection, it sure felt like it was.  The arrangement, the lighting, the vocals, the stage presence - it was like nothing I had ever experienced before.  Clay literally took my breath away with the first song and I don't think I got it back until after I left the auditorium.

Misty.  I have always loved this song, always.  But it became a song that I strongly associated with Clay after he came into a thread on the Official Fan Club site and wrote that a particular post had made him "Misty".  Clay singing this song, and to perfection, made me just a tad bit Misty myself.  I still have "Walk my way, and a thousand violins begin to play" looping through my brain - but the voice singing these lyrics is now Clay's voice - magic.

Crying.  My oh my oh my.  I am so hopeful that if there is going to be a single from Tried and True that it will be Crying.  I feel it has huge cross over potential and the vocal talent of both Clay Aiken & Linda Eder will leave even the most casual of fan (or non fan) speechless.  The marriage of two of the best voices in the business today, the arrangement, the harmonies, from the first note to the very last, was (crap, I'm running out of adjectives here) perfection.

And speaking of vocal talent, I'm going to go a little off topic here for a moment.  Clay said a couple of years ago that he does not consider himself a musician, and maybe that was true two years ago, but it is most certainly not true now.  Clay Aiken used that magnificent voice of his on Friday night like a fine tuned instrument.  The arrangements, orchestration, instrumentation and the vocal presentation complimented each other like nothing I have ever heard.  A lesser musician very easily would have been overpowered - but not Clay, he soared through every note, every key change, and every tempo change - with ease and power. So Clay honey, if you ever read this, please do not sell yourself short again - you truly are a first class musician and you proved it over and over and over again on Friday night.

(Back on topic here).  In My Life.  Honestly, what can you say?  This part of the concert was pure Clay.  Thanking those who were there for him, helped him through some rough times as he was growing up.  Giving a shout out to people who make a difference every day in the life of a child - teachers.  It could have been TOO sentimental, but it was just classic Clay.  It was presented with humor, heart and complete sincerity.  This has always been one of my Top 10 Beatles songs, and Clay sang it with an emotional impact that, well, took my breath away and made me tear up.

Ruben Studdard was also in fine voice on Friday night.  How fun to see the two of them on stage together again.  These two men MADE American Idol what it is today and the chemistry is still there after all these years.  There is true friendship there, true respect for each other.  The Medley with Clay, Ruben & Quiana Parler was FANTASTIC!!  So funny and yet it was believable - wonderful arrangements, great vocals and great interaction between the three of them.

There are just too many high points to list!  Build Me Up Buttercup - I was grinning like a damn fool through the entire song.  Clay kicked BUTT and, although he "thanked" Ben for making him sing higher than he'd ever sung before, it was completely effortless (and I hope his back's feeling better real soon).

Suspicious Minds was also another show stopping song and it was like coming home seeing Clay & Quiana on stage together again.  Impossible, There's a Kind of Hush, You Don't Have to Say You Love Me, What Kind of Fool Am I, Who's Sorry Now - all of them rich, lush, beautiful, all of them showcasing Clay's amazing voice.

This leads us to Unchained Melody.  I am finding it impossible to describe Unchained Melody - I think I need to hear it again and again and again (if you get my drift) but here's what I THINK I remember.  It started out lower than he has typically performed the song, it also seemed like it started out slower - more true to the version made popular by the Righteous Brothers and Clay was fantastic.  Nope, I can't do it, I cannot explain it - I've read it likened to a 747 taking off or thunder that started in Clay's toes and traveled through his body.   What I remember is that the word "I" (right before he would normally hit the falsetto note) was the starting off point, it was used as the catalyst, and the word itself was held and the note was built upon, until it crescendoed into NEED and at that point all hell broke loose on stage - the lights didn't just move, they BLASTED onto him and bathed him in the spotlight and the rest of the song was pure, unadulterated vocal brilliance (I STILL wish they had to redo that song, I REALLY need to hear it again!!).  Let me give you a feel of the impact.  There was an usher in my section, she was sitting on a chair in the pit area.  She sat through the entire concert doing her job sitting in the pit.  At the end of Unchained Melody this woman leapt to her feet, screaming, cheering and applauding - she was completely caught up in the moment, it was real, it was organic, it was sincere.

Seven years ago, on this little TV show called American Idol, Clay Aiken performed Mack the Knife.  In her critique, Paula Abdul said "Clay you were so ultra cool, I'm scared of you boy.  You did an amazing job - so hip, so cool".  All I can say is - Paula honey, you ain't seen nothing yet.

The preliminary rounds of auditions for American Idol, Season 9, will be different from the past seasons.  Because of the departure of Paula Abdul, the producers of American Idol have opted for having celebrity judges at the judges table.

The list of guest judges is excellent.  They include Tony Award winner, Kristin Chenoweth and this years Tony Awards host Neil Patrick Harris.  Other announced judges are Victoria Beckham, Mary J. Blige, Joe Jonas, Katy Perry and Shania Twain. Each one of these guest judges is active in the entertainment industry at this time and should be able to add some suggestions and advice to the contestants.

The guest judges will join Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi at the judges table.  Ryan Seacrest will still be hosting the show.

Although the guest judges are all highly qualified, many people believe that Paula Abdul will be missed on the show.  Although she has always been a bit “flighty”, she played an important role in the 8 years of American Idol.

What do you think?  Do you think the celebrity judges will be good?  Will Paula be missed?  Please share your thoughts!

American Idol has been around for eight years.  It has produced many talented performers.  Clay Aiken, Kelly Clarkson, Daughtry and Carrie Underwood are arguably the most well-known and talented performers from the eight year run.

But what about Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul and Ryan Seacrest?  Certainly, they were not household names before American Idol hit the air-waves and now they are stars in their own right.

American Idol has shown in the past that the idols are expendable.  They seem to support their talent until another contestant comes along the next year.

But on Tuesday, August 4, 2009, American Idol showed that their judges are not that important to the show……..just ask Paula Abdul.

After weeks of negotiations with the producers of “American Idol,” Paula Abdul said Tuesday evening that she was leaving the top-rated singing competition.

Paula’s contract expired at the end of season 8 and she had been negotiating for a substantial raise from the estimated $2 million that she earned last year.  Unfortunately, she has included the public in her contract negotiations with Fox.  It is usually a bad idea to try to push your boss in a public arena.

There is some sympathy for Paula as she said she just wanted a fair deal.  Judges Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson are already locked into a contract for season nine so they are set.  Then it was announced this week that Kara DioGuardia, the newest of the judges would return for another year.  They all were signed for the year, but Paula and the show were stalled in the negotiations.

And then there is Ryan Seacrest who has signed a three-year deal worth some $45 million to stay as host of “American Idol.”   American Idol must think he is far more important than Paula Abdul.

Paula announced her decision on Twitter saying, “With sadness in my heart, I’ve decided not to return to Idol.  I’ll miss nurturing all the new talent, but most of all … being a part of a show that I helped from day 1 to become an international phenomenon.”

Within an hour, FOX, FremantleMedia North America and 19 Entertainment issued the following statement. “Paula Abdul has been an important part of the ‘American Idol’ family over the last eight seasons and we are saddened that she has decided not to return to the show. While Paula will not be continuing with us, she’s a tremendous talent and we wish her the best.”

What do you think?  Do you think Paula was asking too much of American Idol or do you think the show just wanted to let her go?  Will her departure make a difference??  Do you even care??

Personally, I am not a huge American Idol fan.  But I will always be thankful that they introduced the world to Clay Aiken.

Below is a video of Clay Aiken singing “Bridge Over Troubled Water” on the finale of Season.

With three performances each, Clay Aiken and Ruben Studdard showed the world their singing prowess on the Finale of American Idol, Season II.  The competition, held on May 19, 2003 was the last chance to swing the final votes over to their side. Their performances blew the roof off the place.

The performances for the night were:

Round 1
1. Ruben Studdard--"A House Is Not A Home"
2. Clay Aiken-- "This Is The Night"

Round 2
1. Ruben Studdard, "Imagine"
2. Clay Aiken--"Here There and Everywhere"

Round 3
1. Ruben Studdard-- "Flying Without Wings"
2. Clay Aiken--"Bridge Over Troubled Waters"

Ryan Seacrest started the show by stating that it started with 70,000 contestants and came down to two southern boys who are the most unlikely people in the world to be there.  He also reminded the audience that they would have 3 hours to vote and how important the vote is this evening.

After a video journey of Ruben's American Idol trip, Ruben sang "A House Is Not A Home."  Paula and Simon were excited about the performance, but Simon only said "it was good."

Clay's video journey was shown and then he sang his new single, "This Is The Night."  The judges were impressed with Clay's singing; however, Randy thought the song was terrible.

In the second round, the audience got Lennon and McCartney performed by Clay and Ruben.  Ruben's interpretation of "Imagine" was all positive to the judges; however, no mention was made of the microphone malfunction that lasted throughout the entire first verse.

Clay sang "Here, There and Everywhere."  The judges comments ranged from ...you are still the bomb to very pretty to not blown away.  The lighting for this song was odd and many people thought it made Clay look "scary."

The final round of the night was amazing.  Singing "Flying Without Wings," the judges and the audience delivered an outstanding performance.  The judges commented that it was the best performance of the night.

Clay then performed "Bridge Over Troubled Water" and did a tremendous job.  Accompanied by a choir, Clay knocked the song out of the park.  It left all three judges with big smiles on their faces.

The night produced beautiful performance, two very different vocal styles, and both performers left it all on the stage.

The next night started with a red carpet and ended with the crowning of a new American Idol.  The last night was a 2-hour show so there was a lot of "filler."  Ryan joined Ruben in his dressing room and showed both Ruben and the audience the cheering throngs in Ruben's hometown.  Ruben was his cool self.

Ryan dashed across the hall to visit Clay in his dressing room.  He introduced Clay's fans in Raleigh.  There were over 8,000 people in the RBC Center to cheer and support Clay.  Clay seemed shocked and amazed by the support.

The evening was filled with celebrities who had to give their opinions, former idol performances, goofy films of the judges and much prattle from Ryan.

A medley of songs was performed by all the finalists which included songs originally performed by the celebrity judges.

Then Ruben, Kimberley Locke, and Clay performed a medley of "Superstar," "Somewhere Over The Rainbow," and "On the Wings of Love," respectively.

Ruben performed "Flying Without Wings" with the choir again. Then, Ryan took us back to Birmingham, at Ruben's church. They were very proud.

Clay performed "Bridge Over Troubled Waters".  Then, it was back to Raleigh. They were proud, too.

Finally, Ryan said "it's the closest vote in American Idol history, the American Idol is.......Ruben Studdard."

In all reality, there were 2 winners that night.  Both of the singers were talented young men who were ready to step into the world of pop music.  And, as we all know, coming in second just didn't matter.

Enjoy the videos of Clay's performances and then watch the group numbers from the finale.

May 13, 2003.........American Idol, Season 2.  It's time for the Final 3.

Clay Aiken, Kimberley Locke and Ruben Studdard worked hard each week to impress the audience so that they would continue for another week.  American Idol's fans did it right that season.  They voted for the best three  singers of Season 2.

For the Final 3 show, there were only the regular judges.  No guest judge joined the panel.  Ryan Seacrest explained that this was a night of "picks."  All three contestants sang three songs; one was a random pick, one was a judge's pick and the last was the Idol's pick.

The performances of the night and their order were:

Random Round ( fishbowl):
1. Kimberley Locke- "Band of Gold"
2. Ruben Studdard- "Signed, Sealed, & Delivered"
3. Clay Aiken- "Vincent"

Judges' Choice:
1. Kimberley Locke-"Anyone Who Had a Heart" - Randy Jackson
2. Ruben Studdard- "Smile" - Simon Cowell
3. Clay Aiken- "Mack the Knife" -  Paula Abdul

Contestant's Choice:
1. Kimberley Locke- "Inseparable
2. Ruben Studdard- "If Ever Your In My Arms Again"
3. Clay Aiken- "Unchained Melody"

Each Idol chose a song from a fishbowl.  Kim picked "Band of Gold" as her random pick and Ruben picked "Signed, Sealed, Delivered".  All three of the judges thought both of the performances were brilliant.

Clay picked the song, "Vincent" made famous by Don McClean.  The song about suicidal painter, Vincent Van Gogh is a sad and dreary song.  Clay sang a haunting version of the song, but missed a cue that was not noticeable to most people.  He did an excellent job of covering up and going on which is the sign of a true professional.

The judges were brutal.  Their comments ranged from boring to dreary.  Well, it was a dreary song about a sad time.  What was the singer supposed to do?  Of course, Paula had to let everyone know that Clay "forgot" the words, but did not let the TV audience know that the arrangement of the song was changed just before the program started.  Clay said later that he had never even practiced the new arrangement.

The second round was the Judge's Pick.  Randy picked "Anyone Who Had a Heart" for Kim.  Both Randy and Paula thought it was beautiful, but Simon said it was "safe....good...ish."

For Ruben, Simon chose the song, "Smile."  The judges' comments included the words, brilliant, well-done and beautiful.

Paula announces that Clay had been assigned an 'American classic' known as "Mack The Knife." She also said it oozes coolness---and he deserves coolness.  She commented that if Clay pulls this off, he will be cool and not a lounge lizard. He will go straight to headliner.

Most of the audience thought that Clay did an awesome job on the song and thought he looked great in his tux.  The judges seemed to agree and used the words, cool, brilliant and standing ovation when they critiqued his performance.

For the last performances for the Idols, they were supposed to pick a song from their own idol.

Kim and Ruben sang their picks and the judges were extremely nice in their comments.  Simon said, "This is the only time we've had three good people in the Top 3... not the case last year -so I don't know who will be in the Top 2 because you all deserve to be there"

Clay sang "Unchained Melody" after sharing that it was his mom's favorite song and she was his "idol".  The judges were impressed with his performance, especially Paula who thought it was the best performance of the entire season.

And, after some "silly" banter by Ryan Seacrest, the show was over for the night.

The following evening was results night and we finally got to know who would be in the finale.

The contestants did a medley of love song duets, including "Up Where We Belong," "Reunited," and "Solid."  The three contestants were great together and a shout out to Michael Orland for arranging the medleys.

Musical guests for the evening are Tamyra Gray and Justin Guarini who both sing.  Too bad that Justin chose to sing the same song that Clay sang the night before...Unchained Melody."

The contestants had a chance to fly home to their hometowns for a day the previous week. Kim had many appearances and interviews. One DJ predicted next year's movie will be From Kimberley to Ruben! She sang for friends, returned to school, signed autographs---had a good time.

Ruben headed home to Alabama and greeted lots of kids and former teachers. The kids seemed star struck. He also visited his school, his church friends, and had other assorted appearances.

Clay headed to North Carolina. He went to the YMCA to receive a 500-foot greeting card, he did radio and TV interviews, he went to his old school to see the kids, and he spent time with Mike and Diane. Clay went home and ate some barbecue with the family.  He took his Mom a bouquet of flowers.  He met the governor and he got to throw out the first ball and sing the anthem for the Durham Bulls game. He was brought to the game on a helicopter. Then it was back to LA. It was apparently a really full trip considering it only lasted a little over 24 hours.

Finally, it was time for the results and it was revealed that Kim was going home.  She smiled graciously and gave a hug to tearful Clay.

Ryan closed the night by announcing that there would be an extra show the next week to get to know the contestants better.

Next week......the finale!!

We have included videos of all three of Clay's songs and the group performance.  It certainly was a great week.

May 6, 2003 and it’s the final four!  And for Season 2 of American Idol, that means Clay Aiken, Ruben Studdard, Kimberley Locke, and Josh Gracin. All four singers have survived many weeks of singing, dancing, humility and hard work.  Which ones will be going on and which one will be going home?

The show starts with the group of 4 on stage with Ryan Seacrest as he introduces each singer.  Ryan then announces that all the songs tonight are courtesy of the BeeGees and that Robin Gibb is the guest judge for the evening.

The idols and their songs were sung in the following order:

First Song:
1. Josh Gracin – “Jive Talkin”
2. Clay Aiken – “To Love Somebody”
3. Kimberley Locke – “I Just Want T Be Your Everything”
4. Ruben Studdard – “Nights on Broadway”

Second Song:
1. Josh Gracin – “To Love Somebody”
2. Clay Aiken – “Grease”
3. Kimberley Locke – “Emotions”
4. Ruben Studdard – “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart”

Josh started the performances with a country-styled, “Jive Talkin”.  He roamed through the audience as he tried to please the crowd and the judges.  The judges all agreed that the performance was good.

“To Love Somebody” is a beautiful song and when you add Clay Aiken to it, you have perfection.  His voice was full of emotion and it was soft when needed and when needed, he belted out the song with passion.

All 4 of the judges were so complimentary to Clay and his performance.  The words, fantastic and brilliant were used more than once.  Simon even said it was one of the best performances he had ever heard throughout the entire competitions in both the USA and England.

Kim Locke, looking good in black, got mixed reviews from the judges.  Simon called her performance “sweet and ordinary – nothing special.”

It was Ruben’s turn, but before he started, Ryan let the TV audience know that the audience members had thunder sticks that had Ruben’s name on them.  Somehow, that didn’t seem too fair to the other contestants, but……it was Ruben!!

The judges were excited about Ruben’s performance of “Nights on Broadway.”  Each judge had only positive remarks to make.

The second round started with Josh singing “To Love Somebody.”  The judges loved the touch of country Josh added to the song and thought his second round song was better than the first round.

The most “out of the box” performance of the evening was the second song by Clay Aiken.  Singing “Grease”, Clay dressed the part with tight jeans, a tee-shirt and a red leather jacket.  AND, who could forget the “hip shake.”  Clay had fun and took a risk which worked with the audience and three of the judges.  However, Simon was not happy.  Leave it to Simon to say “HORRIBLE”!!

Kim was next, singing “Emotions” and the judges were pleased with her performance although Simon thought it was just not her night.

The words, brilliant and fantastic were back when the judges critiqued Ruben.  Simon even threw in a “sensational.”

Ryan started the results night by announcing that there were 22 million votes last night.

The group performance of the evening was a medley of BeeGee’s hits.  Each contestant had one song that they were featured on……the harmonies were great.

The bottom two for the night were Kim and Josh.  But, before the results, there was a Ford Commercial.  Remember the one where Ruben is dressed like a pimp and “Nerd” Clay joins him at the end?

When the time finally came to announce who was going home, Ryan didn’t waste words.  It was a quick “Josh, you’re out. Kim, you are safe.”  And, the Final Four is no more.

We have 3 videos for this night.

1.  To Love Somebody
2.  Grease
3.  Group Performance

April 29, 2003 was a momentous night on American Idol.  Most Clay Aiken fans will remember the night with excitement.  It was the night that brought Clay and "Solitaire" together for the first time.

The theme of the evening was Neil Sedaka Night. Neil was the guest judge for this show so he joined Randy, Paula and Simon at the judges dais.

This is the first night where the remaining contestants sang two songs--one from the 60's and one composed by Neil Sedaka. So, since it was the "Top Five", the audience anticipated 10 performances for the night.

The songs and the order for the night were:

1st song:

  1. Ruben Studdard - "Ain't Too Proud to Beg"
  2. Trenyce - "Proud Mary"
  3. Josh Gracin - "Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye"
  4. Kimberley Locke - "I Heard It Through the Grapevine"
  5. Clay Aiken - "Build Me Up Buttercup"

2nd song:

  1. Ruben Studdard- "Breaking Up Is Hard to Do"
  2. Trenyce - "Love Will Keep Us Together"
  3. Josh Gracin - "Bad Blood"
  4. Kimberley Locke - "Where The Boys Are"
  5. Clay Aiken - "Solitaire"

Ruben started the evening with a good rendition of "Ain't Too Proud to Beg" but his outfit was the talk of the night.  Wherever you read, people were commenting on the "Reynolds Wrap" outfit.  Simon was horrified and not afraid to say so.

The judges were impressed with the way Trenyce sang "Proud Mary." But, leave it to Simon to remark that she looked like a "Drag Queen."

Simon must have been a in a bad mood because all the other judges enjoyed the performances of Josh and Kim, but he could not find anything nice to say.  According to Simon was "just not good enough" and Kim was something that "can be heard in any church across America."

Finally, there was Clay.  He came out swinging as he sang "Build Me Up Buttercup" and the judges (even Simon) were impressed.  After this song, Neil said "You sing like Andre Agassi plays tennis-perfection.  And I would kill to write and produce your first CD."

With so many performances in one night, the second round of performances started immediately.  Each song in this round was written by Neil Sedaka.

Again, Ruben impressed the judges.  All four of them felt Ruben performed like a professional and there was no comment on his clothing.

According to the judges, Trenyce hit a "home run" with her performance of "Love Will Keep It Together", but Josh still could not get any support from Simon.  Simon felt that he just wasn't good enough.

"Where The Boys Are" was a great vehicle to show off Kim's voice and the judges were excited about her performance.  Words like hot, versatile, flirty, sultry and brilliant were heard in their review.

After the break and before the final performance, Ryan entered the Red Room with the four Idols who had performed already. The audience found out that Trenyce does a shot of olive oil before each performance to keep her vocal cords moist.

Kim was elected to introduce the last performer of the night, Clay Aiken.  This performance was not like any other on the show.  The audience saw a star on a dark stage wearing dark clothes. There was just a small light that let us see his serious face while he sang his beautiful arrangement of "Solitaire." He sang it like a man on a mission. He just stood there and sang his heart out. Eventually the lights came on and the audience took a breath.

All four judges seemed to be stunned and were very emotional about Clay's performance.  Even Simon said it was "a fantastic performance."  What a way to end the night.

The result show lasted an hour on April 30th.  The 5 remaining Idols sang a medley of songs from the 60s and some of them made it into the audience and back on the stage.

Burt Bacharach returned and brought some of the Idols with him so that the audience could hear, one more time, "What the World Needs Now" which has been recorded.

Two other things were highlighted in the show, a visit to Tamyra Gray and a video of the "Top 5" at the premiere of the new X-man movie.

Finally, it was time for the results.  This week, Ryan only announced the bottom 2.  It was a shock to everyone when it was announced that Ruben was joining Trenyce in the bottom two.  But, as we all know, it was Trenyce that was "going home"

We have included four videos.  They include the 2 group performances and both of Clay's performances.

"It's Diane Warren Night" said Ryan Seacrest as he started the April 22, 2003 episode of American Idol, Season 2.

A Californian, Diane Warren is considered to be one of the most prolific and successful songwriters of our time.  She has written for such legends as Elton John, Reba McEntire, Aerosmith, Faith Hill and many others.  Diane's songs are featured in more than 60 motion pictures.

Diane has been named ASCAP's Songwriter of the Year six times and Billboard's Songwriter of the Year four times.

With this prolific background, it was obvious that Diane Warren was more than qualified to be the guest judge and mentor for the Top Six contestants on April 22, 2003.

The contestants sang the following songs:

  1. Kimberley Locke - "If You Asked Me To"
  2. Clay Aiken - "I Could Not Ask For More"
  3. Trenyce - "Have You Ever"
  4. Josh Gracin - "That's When I'll Stop Loving You"
  5. Carmen Rasmussen - "Love Will Lead You Back"
  6. Ruben Studdard - "Music of My Heart"

Kim started the competition with a strong performance.  "If You Asked Me To" showed her strengths and she sang with lots of passion.  All of the judges agreed that Kim was improving each week and that she was at the top of her game.  Of course, Simon had to throw in that she was singing better now that she got rid of the "weird" hair.

Singing "I Could Not Ask for More", Clay Aiken was the second performer for the evening.  This beautiful ballad was sung with lots of power and energy.  Although the song had been recorded successfully twice before, Clay made it sound totally different and made it "his" song.

Randy said in his comments that Clay was definitely one of the best.  Paula said that Clay was a star and a definite contender for the finals.  Diane agreed that Clay sang a great version of the song.

Ah.....but now we come to Simon.  Simon had two points he wanted to share.  First, he thought that even though Clay was very talented, he just didn't see Clay as a great recording artist.  Secondly, he went back to the Broadway scenario and said that he thought that Clay would make a fortune on Broadway.  He mentioned Phantom of the Opera and the jokes floated around about Clay in a mask.  That joke seemed to get little positive reaction from the audience members who were already enthralled by Clay.

After Clay's brilliant performance, the show featured the Idols in a commercial for Herbal Essence.  They showed the performers getting different hair treatments.

Trenyce sang "Have You Ever" and got a tepid response form the judges.  Dressed in black leather, she looked good, but she didn't seem to reach out to the audience with this performance.  Simon even commented that it was as if she was wearing a mask.

The four judges were not happy with Josh Gracin's rendition of "That's When I'll Stop Loving You."  Randy thought it was out of tune, and Paula rambled, saying nothing helpful.  Diane went right down the middle of the road by saying only "it was good."  Simon thought that Josh sang through his nose the entire time.  He also teased Josh about being in the Herbal Essence commercial.  He wondered how Josh could do this as he was a "Marine."

The youngest Idol, Carmen Rasmussen had a rough evening.  Singing "Love Will Lead You Back," the judges jumped all over Carmen.  Randy said she was not even close to being the best singer.  Both Paula and Diane thought it was one of her best performances, but not good enough.  Simon told her that she could not win the contest and that she did well to get this far.

Ruben Studdard closed the show with a performance of "Music of My Heart."  The judges gave Ruben a lot of praise.  Randy said that Ruben was right up there with Clay as one of the best in America.  Paula loved his upper register and Diane said he always sounds great.  Simon made an interesting observation when he said that Ruben needed to look out for Kimberley.

The program ended in the Red Room and showed the contestants messing around and having a good time.

The following evening, the results show was short.  The entire group of singers had the opportunity to sing a Diane Warren song, written especially for the group.

After the group performance, the audience was shown a video of Kelly Clarkson finding out that she had the #1 album.  She was very excited.  We also saw the group in their weekly Ford commercial.  Carmen was featured in the commercial that showed the Idols dancing at an old fashioned diner.

The bottom three for this week are

  1. Carmen
  2. Trenyce
  3. Josh

Ryan announced that Carmen was going home.

It was a good week on American Idol and all the idols did a great job.  Next week, each singer will be required to perform two songs.

We have two videos.  The first is Clay singing and the second is the group number.  Enjoy!! Read More→
